Extracts

What people could do after the Thirteen ascended and their essence came back into the world.

The word

They called them "extracts" because that's what they were, small portions of the infinite, carefully drawn out through pure intention. Not dominion over reality, but partnership with it. (ch. 22)

Deliberately smaller than what the Thirteen had: "These weren't the refined, overwhelming gifts of the departed souls. These were gentler powers, more human in scale."

What they look like

The first ones are domestic and slightly absurd, which is how the chapter signals the scale. A woman folds space to reach a fallen clothespin. A man's coffee tastes like whatever he imagines. A girl makes flowers bloom by humming.

Then it organises. Essence "responded to the deepest nature of each soul, shaping itself around core personality traits and emotional resonances":

• artists paint with light, through creativity
• healers mend hearts as well as bodies, through compassion
• builders make dreams solid, through purpose

Cities are built with crystallised intention. Farmers sing soil into yielding. Teachers plant knowledge like seeds.

Not a utopia

The chapter is careful. Extract-users form guilds that clash over territory and technique. Monsters retreat into hidden communities where their magic can run without human interference. Governments cannot write law for abilities that ignore physics.

The child's question

The chapter puts its own thesis in the mouth of a mother:

CHD: Mama, why can some people do magic and others can't? MOM: Because the world is big enough for all kinds of gifts, sweetheart. [...] What matters is what you do with whatever gift you receive.

What this becomes

By Arthur's era the vocabulary has changed completely. Nothing is called an extract. There are soul abilities, Alchemy, and Unmarked.

Whether extracts are the ancestor of soul abilities, of Alchemy, or of both is not established anywhere read so far. See ../systems/soul-abilities.md and ../systems/alchemy.md.

Open questions

• Whether "extract" survives as a word into any later volume.
• Whether the Awakened of Act 1 and extract-users are the same thing. The Awakened predate the ascension, which suggests not. See the-awakened.md.
• Whether the essence is finite, and what happens as it spreads thinner.
