Soul Extraction

Soul Extraction

A named escalation. A fighter stops using their trait and becomes it, announced aloud with a title and an incantation.

What it is

Both combatants in ch. 30 have one, and both treat it as something held back rather than something new. Jade calls hers out when Kael proves "more troublesome than expected", and Kael answers with his own.

The form is consistent: the technique has a title, spoken in capitals, and the state that follows changes what the user is rather than what they can do.

JAD: SOUL EXTRACTION, THRONE ABOVE THE EVERENGULFING DARKNESS!

The words hit the air like a physical force, and reality itself seemed to bend around her. (ch. 30)

Kael's is the first one given complete. A long invocation, then the declaration:

"From the hollow spaces between heartbeats, from the silence that follows the final breath, from the emptiness that remains when all stars have burned out and all gods have forgotten their names..."

KAL: SOUL EXTRACTION, ETERNAL VOID WHERE ALL DREAMS DIE!

Bella's reading of what it reveals: "Not a manipulator of shadows, but an avatar of nihilism itself."

The form

Ch. 30 gives it complete for the first time, and ch. 36 repeats the structure twice over. It is fixed.

  1. An invocation, spoken in italics, stating the truth the user believes underlies existence. It is a thesis rather than a spell.
  2. The declaration: Soul Extraction, </em>.</li> </ol> <p>Neru's invocation calls on "the truth that underlies all order. That entropy can be reversed, that chaos can be crystallized, that even the heat death of the universe can be frozen in perfect, eternal beauty."</p> <p>Shen's calls on "the truth that underlies all change. That destruction is creation, that endings are beginnings, that every moment of peace is just the pause between explosions."</p> <p>The two are answering each other. An Extraction is an argument about what the world is, and the fight is which argument holds.</p> <h2>Known Extractions</h2> <table> <thead> <tr> <th>Who</th> <th>Title</th> <th>Chapter</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody><tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/jade/">Jade</a></td> <td>Throne Above The Everengulfing Darkness</td> <td>30</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/kael/">Kael</a></td> <td>Eternal Void Where All Dreams Die</td> <td>30</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/matta/">Matta</a></td> <td>Flicker That Escapes The Light</td> <td>34</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/neru/">Neru</a></td> <td>Concept Of Absolute Zero</td> <td>36</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/shen/">Shen</a></td> <td>Spark That Shatters The Sky</td> <td>36</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/alexander/">Alexander</a></td> <td>Ragnarök</td> <td>177</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/ivy/">Ivy</a></td> <td>Echidna's Breath</td> <td>179</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/lisa/">Lisa</a></td> <td>Gaia's Severance</td> <td>180</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/noel/">Noel</a></td> <td>Absolute Sanctuary</td> <td>181</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/maeve/">Maeve</a></td> <td>Hora Finalis</td> <td>182</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="/wiki/characters/astra/">Astra</a></td> <td>Dead By Daylight</td> <td>185</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <h2>Matta's is a prayer, and that is different</h2> <p>Ch. 34 breaks the pattern the other four follow. Jade, Kael, Neru and Shen each state a truth they believe underlies existence. Matta asks somebody for something.</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>MTA</strong>: <em>Mercury of the silver paths... Hermes of the golden sandals... Swift-footed messenger of the gods...</em></p> <p><strong>MTA</strong>: <em>I have run your roads since I could walk, carried your messages in my breath, honored your gift with every step. I have never asked for more than you gave freely. But now... now I need to see how fast I can truly go.</em></p> </blockquote> <p>The narration says where the words come from, and it is not memory:</p> <blockquote> <p>The words came from somewhere deep in her <strong>genetic memory</strong>, passed down through generations of her kind. <strong>The old prayers</strong>, the ancient invocations that her people had once whispered to the god of speed and travel.</p> </blockquote> <p>Then the declaration in the standard form:</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>MTA</strong>: <em>Soul Extraction, Flicker That Escapes The Light.</em></p> </blockquote> <p><strong>So an Extraction can be petition rather than assertion.</strong> Hers is the only one addressed to anybody, and the only one that names gods outside the saga's own pantheon.</p> <p>It also matters for what she becomes. Ch. 129 has a temple of seventeen believers praying to <strong>Matta</strong> as "heraldess of haste, keeper of distant light". The woman who prayed to a god of speed ends up occupying the position. See <a href="/wiki/characters/matta/">../characters/matta.md</a>.</p> <h2>Limit Break</h2> <p>Ch. 36 is titled for a related and apparently rarer thing. Mid-fight, Neru and Shen both stop because they feel a pulse from elsewhere on the battlefield:</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>NER</strong>: Kael. He's, he's shattered his limits. [...] Someone who just proved that we've all been playing in the shallow end of the pool.</p> </blockquote> <p>Neru has worked with Kael before and thought he understood the scope of his power. He calls what happened "fundamental change, the kind of transformation that came once in a lifetime", and it is what makes him willing to use his own Extraction at last.</p> <p>So a Soul Extraction and a Limit Break are not the same. The first is a state a fighter can enter. The second appears to be a permanent raising of the ceiling.</p> <h2>What it costs</h2> <p>Not established for an Extraction. Both users in ch. 30 and both in ch. 36 are visibly reluctant to reach for it, which implies a price no chapter names.</p> <p><strong>The tier above it does have a stated price.</strong> A <a href="/wiki/systems/soul-requiem/">Soul Requiem</a> burns something the user cannot get back. Ch. 72 shows Neru paying for his in memories of his mother, in real time, while the reader watches.</p> <h2>The distinction it draws</h2> <p>The chapter uses the two Extractions to separate two things that look alike.</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>KAL</strong>: Darkness is just the absence of light. But what I control, what I am, is <strong>the absence of everything</strong>.</p> </blockquote> <p>Jade's power is presence: darkness that pours out and fills. Kael's is absence: reality around him "began to thin, not darken, but become less substantial, as if the very concept of existence was being drained away".</p> <p>Where Jade's darkness is overwhelming, Kael's is negation. The narrator's bracket for ch. 29 flags it: <strong>"Who would've thought there'd exist a darkness stronger than Jades!"</strong></p> <h2>Relation to later systems</h2> <p>Nothing in Arthur's era is called a Soul Extraction. Whether it survives as a concept, is renamed, or dies with this generation is not established.</p> <p>The name is worth noting on its own: the era's ordinary word for a power is an <strong>extract</strong>, "a small portion of the infinite, carefully drawn out through pure intention" (ch. 22). A Soul Extraction appears to be the same verb applied to the whole of a soul rather than a portion of it. See <a href="/wiki/lore/extracts/">../lore/extracts.md</a>.</p> <h2>Open questions</h2> <ul> <li>Whether every awakened person has one, or only the strongest.</li> <li>What it costs.</li> <li>Whether the spoken title is required or ceremonial.</li> </ul> <h2>A correction</h2> <p>This entry once recorded Kael's Extraction as unnamed, on the grounds that ch. 30 gave only his invocation. It gives the title too, in the same form as every other: <em>SOUL EXTRACTION, ETERNAL VOID WHERE ALL DREAMS DIE!</em></p> </article><section class="cites"><h2>Appearances</h2><ul class="chips"><li><a class="chip" href="https://readsoultale.com/read/the-raid-on-humanity/ch-30" style="text-decoration:none">Chapter 30</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="https://readsoultale.com/read/the-raid-on-humanity/ch-34" style="text-decoration:none">Chapter 34</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="https://readsoultale.com/read/the-raid-on-humanity/ch-36" style="text-decoration:none">Chapter 36</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="https://readsoultale.com/read/the-confession-from-me-to-you/ch-177" style="text-decoration:none">Chapter 177</a></li></ul></section><section class="cites"><h2>Mentioned in</h2><ul class="chips"><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/alexander/" style="text-decoration:none">Alexander</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/jade/" style="text-decoration:none">Jade</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/kael/" style="text-decoration:none">Kael</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/maeve/" style="text-decoration:none">Maeve</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/neru/" style="text-decoration:none">Neru</a></li><li><a class="chip" href="/wiki/characters/shen/" style="text-decoration:none">Shen</a></li></ul></section></div></div></div></div><div class="scrim" id="scrim" data-open="false"></div><aside class="opts" id="opts" data-open="false" aria-label="Reading options"><h2>Reading options<span class="spacer" style="flex:1"></span><button class="icon" id="opts-close" aria-label="Close"><svg viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path d="M6 6l12 12M18 6L6 18"></path></svg></button></h2><p class="preview" id="preview">The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</p><div class="opt-group"><p class="opt-label">Alignment</p><div class="seg" id="seg-align"><button data-align="left" aria-pressed="true" aria-label="Left"><svg viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path d="M3 6h18M3 12h11M3 18h15"></path></svg></button><button data-align="center" aria-pressed="false" aria-label="Centred"><svg viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path d="M3 6h18M6 12h12M4 18h16"></path></svg></button><button data-align="justify" aria-pressed="false" aria-label="Justified"><svg viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path d="M3 6h18M3 12h18M3 18h18"></path></svg></button></div></div><div class="opt-group"><p class="opt-label">Text size</p><div class="size-row"><span class="a1">A</span><input type="range" id="size" min="14" max="26" step="1" value="18" aria-label="Text size"><span class="a2">A</span></div></div><div class="opt-group"><p class="opt-label">Typeface</p><div class="tiles" id="tiles-font"><button class="tile" data-font="original" aria-pressed="true">Original</button><button class="tile" data-font="ubuntu" aria-pressed="false">Ubuntu</button><button class="tile" data-font="lexend" aria-pressed="false">Lexend</button><button class="tile" data-font="atkinson" aria-pressed="false">Atkinson</button><button class="tile" data-font="comic" aria-pressed="false">Comic</button><button class="tile" data-font="mono" aria-pressed="false">Mono</button><button class="tile" data-font="dyslexic" aria-pressed="false">Dyslexic</button></div></div><div class="opt-group"><p class="opt-label">Reading mode</p><div class="toggle-row"><span>Read the whole act at once</span><button class="switch" id="mode" aria-pressed="false" aria-label="Read the whole act at once"></button></div><p class="opt-note">One chapter at a time, or the whole act in one scroll.
