Marcus
A construction foreman who ends the volume running the world.
Who he is
A wolf-hybrid with silver streaking his arms and yellow eyes, directing a mixed crew of humans and monsters through the rubble of Valdris (ch. 90).
He introduces himself by his job, not his species: "I'm Marcus, foreman of this reconstruction project. We've been trying to clear this area for weeks."
Blook calls his voice "deep and lupine" and notes it "carried across the crowd without the need for magic" (ch. 100).
What Nilah says about him
Ch. 91, explaining strength to somebody who assumes it means power:
NLH: Marcus is strong because he can organize a crew and make hard decisions. Sera is strong because she can solve problems that stump everyone else.
That is the volume's argument in one line, delivered about a foreman.
He fights
Ch. 94 has him lead "a mixed group of humans and monsters from Valdris" out to where Nilah is dying, armed. The reconstruction crew turns into a relief column.
Ch. 97 has his howl in the chorus that reaches her.
Speaker of the Council
The Council of Souls elects him its first Speaker. He is described there as "the gruff foreman she remembered from Valdris". See ../lore/the-council-of-souls.md.
Ch. 99 has him bring Valdris's reconstruction plans to the Hall of Heroes, and ch. 100 has him open the knighthood ceremony as the first to step forward.
He is also the man who announces the Order:
MRC: The Council voted to create a new order: the Order of Knighthood.
Open questions
- Whether he has an ability. Nothing in six chapters shows one.
- The saga has at least four Marcuses. A schoolyard bully in ch. 25, a dojo student in ch. 17, this foreman, and a mercenary bleeding out in a forest in ch. 129 who prays for one more chance. Only this one holds office. A reader tracking the name will need to separate them.
