Valdris

Valdris

The city Akumu broke, and the first place the two species rebuild together.

What it looks like after

Ch. 90, three years after Akumu is banished. Rubble-strewn streets, a crater still dominating the town square, and buildings that "bore the scars of Akumu's terror like wounds that refused to heal".

Why it matters

Not the damage. The work crew.

humans and monsters working side by side [...] A wolf-hybrid with silver fur streaking his muscular arms directed a group of human laborers toward a half-constructed foundation, while nearby, a woman with scales glinting along her neck organized supplies with methodical precision.

The chapter is explicit that this is new. Under Akumu the two species "had lived in separate realms, viewing each other with suspicion and fear", and the prejudice did not survive the thing that manufactured it.

The wolf-hybrid is Marcus, foreman of the reconstruction. The woman with the scales is Sera.

What it becomes

The rebuilding crew becomes the government. Marcus goes from foreman of Valdris to first Speaker of the Council of Souls, and Sera goes with him. See ../lore/the-council-of-souls.md.

Ch. 99 has him bring "the original plans for Valdris's reconstruction" as Valdris's contribution to the Hall of Heroes, alongside nets and tools from Port Sunder. The city gives the museum its own blueprints.

Open questions

  • Where it is. No chapter places it on a map.
  • Whether it is the city Nilah is from, or simply the first one she stops at.
